Digital Learning / MacArthur Foundation Project News You Can Use Update Pennsylvania Convention Center
201 C
Description :

The ubiquity of technology in the current learning landscape has prompted a shift in the role of libraries and librarians. Libraries are uniquely positioned to meet the needs of the current digital economy by creating opportunities for equitable access to digital technologies. Increasingly librarians are called on to be information consultants or digital experts, guiding and facilitating the use of print and digital resources, while also connecting patrons to a wide variety of new services. Recently, the MacArthur Foundation, in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Urban Libraries Council, the Association of Science-Technology Centers developed 24 “Learning Labs” across the United States in public institutions, including both libraries and museums. These Learning Labs were uniquely designed to facilitate the YouMedia model of connected learning (pioneered at the Harold Washington Library in Chicago), a project that provides youth access to technology, expert mentorship, and diverse interest pathways. The Connecting Youth team has been documenting the development and instantiation of these sites and will present information about how these unique initiatives provide practitioners space to reimagine the role of public libraries and librarians in engaging teens in digital practices. This includes the importance of leveraging community resources and networks to cultivate partnerships with diverse outside institutions to increase capacities and discussing how librarians and expert mentors can be included as partners and facilitators in the development of learning environments that create more pathways to opportunity for teens. Discussions prompted by this presentation may include the role of librarians in the 21st century, how to sustain and fund teen-focused spaces in libraries or other public institutions, staffing considerations, maintaining collaborations with non-library organizations, and how libraries and librarians respond to changing digital contexts in proactive ways.
